Monroe County Residents have done an outstanding job in getting their pets spayed &/or neutered. In 2009, animal intake at the Monroe County Animal Shelter was 5909; yet in 2024, animal intake was only 1951 at Eastbourne Animal Center.

MCFA Spay-Neuter Offering is Changing!
MCFA promotes spay and neuter within our communities to reduce unplanned and unwanted animal births. These animals often end up as strays and in shelters. MCFA is now offering lower cost spay-neuter services in our Clinic. Although the available appointments are limited, in part due to the need to spay or neuter all Shelter animals first, we will be growing.
By doing the surgeries in our Clinic we are able to lower the cost per surgery, increases the number of animals served with a given level of funding, and will eventually provide this service on a more frequent basis.
In addition, volunteers are working on getting funding to continue with the SNAP program that was founded several years ago and offers free vouchers for the surgeries based on need.
Details of the new MCFA spay-neuter offering will be presented on the MCFA website, in community publications, and at community locations in the near future.
Studies show that pets who live in the states with the highest rates of spaying/ neutering also live the longest. Part of the reduced lifespan of unaltered pets can be attributed to their increased urge to roam, exposing them to fights with other animals, getting struck by cars, and other mishaps. Another contributor to the increased longevity of altered pets involves the reduced risk of certain types of cancers. For example, male pets who are neutered eliminate their chances of getting testicular cancer and it is thought that they also have lowered rates of prostate cancer, and female pets that are spayed, have lowered rates of mammary tumors.
Did You Know? In 2024, animal intake at the center was reduced 67% from its the peak in 2009 (6,000 to 1,951). Euthanasia was reduced by a huge 93% (~4,000 to 262) during the same period. So many animals have been saved!
MCFA wishes to recognize and thank ALL of our generous grantors and donors for their support of spay-neuter at Monroe County Friends of Animals - Eastbourne Animal Center.
